Last week, I emailed the volunteer coordinator at Crossroads House which is a homeless shelter in Portsmouth. I wanted to know how Joelle, Marina and I could volunteer our time or services. I realized it would be tricky due to J & M's ages. Today, I got a call from Diane, the kitchen director. She said that help is needed in the kitchen but laws would prohibit the girls from taking part. HOWEVER, she asked if I would consider making items at home and bringing them to the shelter. This way Joelle and Marina could help in the cooking AND delivery. I jumped at this opportunity. Diane told me that they get a lot of meat/potatoes donations but they lack in what she considers the "luxury" of sweet items. Sweet items at Crossroads are defined as breads, muffins, cookies, rolls, etc.. The fact that these are considered luxuries just isn't right. I eat banana bread almost daily, muffins most every morning and cookies pretty darn regularly. Oh, the things we take for granted. Thus, we 3 girls have committed to donating up to 7 loaves of bread and/or 7 dozen cookies and/or 7 dozen muffins. We will make our deliveries on the 2nd Friday and 4th Tuesday of every month. We don't have to make this much and depending on the week, we may not be able to. But, we will give it every effort even if it means we only end up with half our goal. Why wouldn't we? The pleasure we will get in knowing that someone down on their luck is enjoying a bit of life's luxuries....well, it doesn't get any better than that.We are a family of three girls. "We" include, Brenda, Joelle and Marina. To quote a show we watch often...."it may be a crazy life but it's our life".

Brenda,
We would love to help you with this if you find that it is too much or there is a week you can't do it... maybe we can have a baking party?!
:) Katie
You know you never cease to amaze me. I know exactly what your day consists of. On a daily basis you work your home business at least 8 hours every day, you are constantly running to doctors and dentists whether it be for two beautiful little girls or yourself. Oh and then there is the food shopping and, of course, the next step is food preparation (breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.)Don't forget shopping for clothes and other necessities and the dreaded, never ending laundry. You drive your kids to school each day...both ways to two different schools, at two different times. Then comes the homework with both girls vieing for your knowledge on their particular homework assignments of the day.I have been talking with you on the phone when all the while you were researching subjects that you didn't even study when you were in school. Your purpose is to assure that your girls get the best grades that they are capable of so that they will grow to be the best they can be at whatever career they may choose. I can't believe that now you are taking on another task. You have such wonderful gift. It's the gift of giving of yourself, your heart and your time. Even more wonderful is that you are teaching your girls that same incredible gift. Not everyone is capable of this gift but dear daughter you are. And what makes all of this so significant is that you do all of this alone without the aid of a husband. Your children absolutely adore you. Hmmmm, I wonder why.
Your secret admirer,
Mom
